Tesla dismissed its marketing team this month. The layoffs come only a year after a mandate to “try advertising” that Elon Musk later said was “too generic.” But is marketing really to blame? Is there a takeaway for other companies?
The world is going bonkers over a bombastic claim implying that AI is the doom of marketing. On a recent episode of the Artificial Intelligence Podcast hosted by Paul Roetzer and Mike Kaput, the hosts referred to an interview of Sam Altman on a site called Our AI Journey. In my agency days, I once woke up at 5:00 am to meet a TV host at my client’s donut shop for a behind-the-scenes first look at their pumpkin-spiced lattes and donuts. (In Indiana, we love our donuts.) The TV coverage was great, but you know what made an even bigger impact? The Instagram stories the media personality shared.
